Background about the FLMFPD Proposed Mill Levy Increase Minimize

The Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Protection District (FLMFPD) Board of Directors has authorized the question of a 1.5 mill levy increase to be placed on the May ballot for the voters of the district. The election will be conducted through a mail-in ballot process. Eligible voters will receive their ballots by mail for voting. The election will conclude on May 4, 2010.

The FLMFPD encompasses approximately 250 square miles, from the Colorado/New Mexico state line on Highway 140, to the top of Hesperus Hill, to the county line at the top of Mancos Hill, to the bottom of Blue Hill in Wildcat Canyon and also includes La Plata Canyon. The district serves approximately 1450 households with a population of approximately 4,500 people. The Fire District, a special tax district, is governed by an elected five-member board of directors.

The FLMFPD provides structure fire and wild land fire defense, hazardous material incident response, rescue operations as well as emergency medical services.

The department consists of 35 volunteer members and a full-time salaried chief officer. The majority of members are cross-trained in different disciplines. Several members are trained in special operations, including energy pipeline fires, ice rescue and rope (low and high angle) rescue.

We've been notified by SJB Health that nine doses of H1N1 flu vaccine have been set aside for our department, which I'll pick up tomorrow (Tuesday).  More will be coming as supplies arrive in our area.  I believe this is in nasal mist form.  If you're interested in getting vaccinated, please let me know asap so I can create a list and get vaccinations scheduled. First preference will be given to EMTs and First Responders (because they have direct patient contact).

My sister in Rapid City, South Dakota called this afternoon.  She works in health care at Rapid City Regional Hospital.  At a meeting there today it was announced that they have 12 H1N1 cases in hospital right now.  There have been two deaths.  The hospital there is now taking some pretty dramatic steps to control access to the facility as well as providing for infection control with staff.   I think we can expect much the same to occur here in coming days or weeks.

Please remember that handwashing is the first line of defense with the...

The freezer next to the new ice maker at Station 3 has been locked to secure the frozen pork from the 4-H pig purchase. We apologize for the inconvenience, but none of us had personal freezer space to accommodate the meat. Plans are being formulated about how to turn the frozen sausage into a fund raising opportunity for the department. Stay tuned!

In cooperation with Southwest Community College a First Responder class is being taught by Doug and Leesa Zalesky at Station 3 during the month of October for personnel of GCC Energy (King Coal Mine). A second class has been scheduled to begin October 26.

Volunteer being sought to edit and publish the FLMFD monthly newsletter and activities calendar. Anyone interested in the position should contact Leesa Zalesky for specifics.

For the last couple of years a committee has been working on crafting a new set of by-laws that would better guide the department into the future. A lot of time and effort has gone into the development of these as well as a lot of input from members. As this is the members’ department it is extremely important that member input be a part of the process. During a recent business meeting some questions regarding current language in the proposed by-laws came up and it is prudent that we address these questions for all members. The intent at this last business meeting was to take a final vote on the passage of these new by-laws, but it was decided to delay that until questions were answered and clarification was made on some issues.

Probably the biggest issue surrounded the selection and voting process for the officer team each year. In the past, individuals were nominated for positions and the membership voted on each position individually. While the language in the proposed by-laws may seem to completely...

The department will be taking possession of two 6 x 6 brush units from Colorado State Forest. These units will arrive late fall or early winter, after the Fort Collins shop has check over the units. Brush Tanker 73 will be returned back to the Forest Service once these units are placed in service. This will leave us with three 6 x 6 brush tankers with low profile tanks. One of the trucks will have a CAFS unit on board.

IMPORTANT! Please note the following for EMS response. When dispatched on a medical call to a residence with a known single patient incident, only ONE medic unit should respond. Additional personnel should respond with a rescue unit if a medic unit is already in route. When dispatched on an MVA call, ONE medic unit, a rescue, and an engine should respond in that order. If additional personnel are available, a second medic unit may respond after the initial assignment has been filled.

A follow-up to department discussion regarding expanded EMS service. Since our meeting...

The month of October might just be the busiest month of all for observations and days of recognition. I could do the whole article on just that topic and still not have room for everything. So I picked out a few special ones related to the department and our members. I’m sure I missed many so I apologize in advance. Here goes. Of course everyone knows that October is Fire Prevention Month and that October 4-10 is Fire Prevention Week. The weekend of October 2-4 is the Fallen Firefighters Memorial weekend and October 1 is Fire Pup Day. October is also Go Hog Wild-Eat Country Ham month, the month of Free Thought, Positive Attitude month, Sausage month, Spinach Lovers month and Squirrel Awareness month. Some other important weekly observances include Emergency Nurses week (11-17), National Chemistry week (18-24) and Give Wildlife a Break week (26-11/1). Some significant day observances are Naval Academy day (10th), Navy birthday (13th) and Navy Day on the 27th. Probably one of the best days of the month, for all...
