Open Burning Restrictions Enacted South of U.S. Highway 160 in La Plata County - Thursday, July 01, 2010

Due to the extremely dry conditions in La Plata County and the serious threat of fire danger that these conditions impose, the La Plata County Board of County Commissioners today enacted restrictions on open burning in areas of La Plata County that are south of U.S. Highway 160. The fire restrictions, which are effective immediately, prohibit open burning, burn barrels and agricultural burning on private property in the unincorporated areas of La Plata County located south of Highway 160 and on property owned by La Plata County.  The use of a campfire, coal or wood-burning stove, any type of charcoal grill or open fire in any undeveloped area is prohibited.

Background about the FLMFPD Proposed Mill Levy Increase Minimize

The Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Protection District (FLMFPD) Board of Directors has authorized the question of a 1.5 mill levy increase to be placed on the May ballot for the voters of the district. The election will be conducted through a mail-in ballot process. Eligible voters will receive their ballots by mail for voting. The election will conclude on May 4, 2010.

The FLMFPD encompasses approximately 250 square miles, from the Colorado/New Mexico state line on Highway 140, to the top of Hesperus Hill, to the county line at the top of Mancos Hill, to the bottom of Blue Hill in Wildcat Canyon and also includes La Plata Canyon. The district serves approximately 1450 households with a population of approximately 4,500 people. The Fire District, a special tax district, is governed by an elected five-member board of directors.

The FLMFPD provides structure fire and wild land fire defense, hazardous material incident response, rescue operations as well as emergency medical services.

The department consists of 35 volunteer members and a full-time salaried chief officer. The majority of members are cross-trained in different disciplines. Several members are trained in special operations, including energy pipeline fires, ice rescue and rope (low and high angle) rescue.

Beginning  in late September, a HazMat Ops class is being planned. The HazMat Ops class is open to all members and will give personnel a further awareness of the complexities  present during certain situations like MVAs or wild land fires on or near gas and oil sites.
As of January 2009, all new Firefighter I students must have a HazMat Ops for certification.
Following the HazMat Ops class, a Firefighter II class will be held at Station 3: Dates and times TBA. FFII is open to anyone with FFI. The class is less physically challenging than FFI. It's a great opportunity to advance knowledge and skills. If interested contact me.

Some would say, and I am one of those who would say, it takes a special person to be a fire fighter. For some it is a way to give back to the community and for others it starts off as a way to meet friends and interact with a group of individuals who are motivated to come together to help one another. It’s responding to calls day and night to any number of emergencies. It’s the challenge of remembering how to cut a car apart, making entry into a burning structure or responding to that wild land incident with the large plume of smoke and you are still miles out from the scene or you are entering a residence for a medical call and you have family looking at you as if you have all the answers and they want everything to be alright. It is seeing your fellow humans, your neighbors and sometimes your friends at their worst, and looking to you to help them through an event that forever will be in their memory. It is something that you will never forget or regret doing.

Being a volunteer is like taking on a part...

Those of you who have a 800MHz handheld radio in your possession, please start using your 800 MHZ radio as a means of communication, person to person, after you have checked on the air using your VHF. The 800 is not linked to dispatch as of yet, so they will not hear us, but in times of lapsed coverage this should help out. Also, lets see how these new systems will work for us, now is the time to work out some bugs if we need to.

We have the unofficial word that our grant request was funded. If that is true we will then have enough 800 MHz equipment to migrate to the 800 system once we have them in place on the units.

June and July have passed and I hope everyone has had a good summer. The time off has been nice, but it is time to get back to reality. We will have scheduled training in August as follows:

Thursday August 6th at 1900, Station 3. There will be discussion on the future of our EMS program at Fort Lewis Mesa Fire. All EMTs, please try to attend.

Thursday August 13th, Friday August 14th and Saturday August 15th: We will offer the Engineer short course that we had a couple of years ago. This is a good opportunity for those who would like to learn how to operate the pump panel on the structure engines as well as a good refresher for those who have already taken the class. If you plan on taking the class, or would like to refresh, please contact me so we can accommodate all requests. The Thursday and Friday class will be held at Station 3 starting at 1900, Saturday will be at station 2 starting at 0900.

Thursday August 20th at 1900, Station 3: We will have Williams...

Maynard Brandsma of DFRA passed away this past Monday. He was a volunteer Lt. and was very active with DFRA. There will be a memorial service on Sunday, July 26th, at 1930. It will be held at the Christ the King Lutheran Church, 495 Florida Road, Durango. Please keep Maynard, his family and the DFRA family in your thoughts and prayers.

Engine 74 has been placed out of service due to the unreliability of the fire pump. It will be stripped of its equipment in the very near future, and that equipment will be placed on other trucks in the fleet. After working on this pump over the past 2 years, and many hours have been spent on it, the lack of available parts, I have decided that we can no longer keep this truck in service as a structure engine.

The truck itself runs fine and we have had no problems with it. Later this year or over the winter we will convert the truck for other uses.

Hope everyone is having a good summer,

San Juan College is offering 2 Fire Instructor I courses this summer. Attached are the flyers for the classes. The first will be held every Monday night from 1800 – 2200 starting July 6. The second class will be held in one week on August 10 thru 14, 800 – 1700. For the one week course, the students are required to read chapters 1 thru 13 of the text book and complete the same chapters in the study guide prior to the start of the class. This is due to the short amount of time for home work in the class. Keep in mind that there will be other home work for the class other than reading.

Please call with questions.

Thanks,
